Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program

The residency will run from May 1, 2008- April 1, 2009.

be uploaded from September 15 until October 31 through the link
below.
The 2008/2009 Studio Program will be housed on the lower level
of Smack Mellon's newly renovated building at 92 Plymouth Street.
Smack Mellon offers free studio space to eligible artists for a one-year period. The program provides artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space and a $5000 fellowship (dependent upon funding). The program does not provide living space. Artists also have access to shared facilities that include a fabrication shop, 2 G5 workstations for video editing, DVD burner and CD read/write capabilities, 2 emacs, flatbed and slide scanners, DVD players, projectors and monitors, wireless Internet access and technical support.
Studios range in size from 250 to 300 square feet. Not all studios have windows. Artists will not be permitted to choose their studio. Artists who are accepted into the program must be prepared to actively use their studio a minimum of 50 hours a month or they will lose it. Artists may not accept a residency at another studio program during the same time as their Smack Mellon residency.
Eligibility
All applicants must be residents of the United States or have a valid visa not expiring before the end of the program, 18 years or older, may not be enrolled in any degree program and must be able to demonstrate need for a studio. Applicants may not be a resident artist in another studio program at the same time as the 2008/2009 Smack Mellon residency.
Selection Process
A panel of arts professionals and artists will review applications and select artists for the 2008-2009 season. Artists will be selected by the quality of their work and their potential for making the most of their time in the program. The selection process will be completed by the end of February 2008. All applicants will be notified by mail. Please do not call the office for selection results.

PART ONE:
APPLICATION PAPERWORK MUST INCLUDE AND BE PLACED IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER:
Please do not staple, package or bind materials. Submitted paperwork will not be returned. Please write your Last Name, First Name at the top of each page.
PART ONE of submitted applications must be postmarked on or before Oct. 31.
Applications received after this date will be disqualified. Applications should
not be sent FEDEX or UPS, as there may be no one in the office to receive the
package.

A. IMAGE SCRIPT
The numbers on the image script should correspond with the numbers marked on the image file. (Each uploaded image file must be titled with your Last Name, underscore, First Name, image number. Example: Smith_John01)
Include the title, date, medium, dimensions, and a brief description of the work (less than 50 words for each image).
B. RESUME
Please include your name, address, phone number and email address along with exhibition and educational background.
C. ARTIST STATEMENT
In 250 words or less, write a statement about your work and your process.
D. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
In 250 words or less, describe your potential plans for projects, ideas and expectations for Smack Mellon.
E. REFERENCES
Please provide the name, email address, telephone # and address of three references who know you on a professional level and can comment on your recent work and artistic development.
F. APPLICATION FORM

G. SASE
If you are sending a DVD and would like it sent back please include a self-addressed stamped envelope with proper postage. We will not be responsible for return of materials that do not include a SASE.

PART 2:
DOCUMENTATION
All work samples must be submitted electronically except for film/video, performance or kinetic art which must be submitted on DVD. Only ONE format will be reviewed. We will not accept CDs of digital images. Slides or VHS will also no longer be accepted. Please do not send original Artwork.
A. 10 Images
Each image file must be titled with your Last Name, underscore, First Name, image number. Example: Smith_John01.
Accepted File type: JPG only
Maximum size in any direction: 6" or 1000 px
Image resolution: 72 DPI.
FOR DVD
Only moving images, ie. time-based media, video, kinetic art or documentation of performance art, should be submitted on DVD. DVDs of still artwork or documentation of artistic process will not be viewed. For DVD pieces containing several work examples, please make each piece a separate chapter on the DVD for easier viewing. DVDs will be viewed on DVD players only, not on computers, so please test your DVD before submitting it.
