Guidelines for Internships / Volunteers

Internships

Our internships are available to college students and recent college graduates looking for experience working in a nonprofit gallery. We offer the unique opportunity to learn about running a nonprofit organization with an exhibition space, artist studio residency program, and education program serving local teens. Because we are a small organization, interns will have the chance to learn through direct contact with the Executive Director, Director of Exhibitions, Programs Manager, and artists.

Interns are expected to commit 8-16 hours per week for 3-4 months. Interns must be fully vaccinated and able to show valid proof of vaccination before the start of the internship. The intern will work with Smack Mellon staff on a variety of projects in the office, as well as independently-driven projects. Applicants should be passionate about working in art and nonprofits, and excited to assist our teen art mentorship program. Applicants should be extremely self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, energetic, and hardworking with excellent written and communication skills. Must be proficient in Mac OS, Google programs, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe suite, as well as basic video editing and sharing. Knowledge of WordPress and other programs is a plus.

Intern will assist with:

  • Art Ready (artist mentor program), including offsite travel to artist studios
  • Studio Program (residency), supporting the selection panel as needed
  • General office administration, including updating our website, press kits, and social media
  • Assisting with membership outreach and mailings
  • General correspondence
  • Maintaining Smack Mellon’s digital archive
  • Photographing events
  • Assisting with exhibition planning, research, and archiving
