Jamaal Peterman

Artist Website

Jamaal Peterman uses painting and installation to highlight the separation of classes reinforced by commodities and wealth. His recent work explores the concept of post-black serialism in relation to urban landscape. By exploring the proximity of black bodies throughout western history and its misrepresentation through stereotypes, he aims to deconstruct stigmas placed upon the urban community. The paintings visually break down the layers of code and conduct governing the mental state of African Americans. Peterman is interested in the collective consciousness it imposes on African American youth.

Born in Florida and raised in Md, Jamaal Peterman is a New York-based visual artist. He holds a BFA from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2014) and an MFA from Pratt Institute (2019).

He is the recipient of Artscape top emerging artist award and Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series finalist (2017). He had his first solo exhibition at Artist Proof gallery in Washington DC, Georgetown (2018).
