Art and Letters: A Family Workshop with Artist Cecile Chong

Organized by the Adams Street Library in collaboration with Smack Mellon

Join artist Cecile Chong for a creative artmaking and letter-writing workshop inspired by the current exhibitions at Smack Mellon featuring artists Golnar Adili and Kate Teale.

The program begins at 10:00 AM at Smack Mellon with a brief 20-minute exhibition visit exploring themes of memory, correspondence, and place. At 10:30 AM, participants will walk one block to the Adams Street Library, where Chong will lead a hands-on workshop.

Inspired by Golnar Adili’s work with family archives and letters exchanged across borders, participants will create letters, postcards, or illustrated messages to send to someone they care about. By writing, translating, or sharing words in any language spoken in their families or communities, participants will experiment with combining words, handwriting, and visual marks to create personal messages that reflect their own stories.

All materials will be provided. Cecile is fluent in English, Spanish, and Cantonese, and welcomes participants to write and share words in any language spoken in their families or communities.
