DUMBO Open Studios

Join us on Saturday, April 22nd and Sunday, April 23rd, 1–6PM, for the second 2022-2023 Open Studios event, in conjunction with DUMBO Open Studios. Smack Mellon’s current exhibitions will also be on view throughout Open Studios: Itziar Barrio, did not feel low, was sleeping and ann/drew gayle, just a moment. Please note: masks are required to enter the lower level of our building where the artists’ studios are located.

Current artists-in-residence are Gi (Ginny) Huo, Miatta Kawinzi, Joseph Liatela, Kevin Quiles Bonilla, Ogemdi Ude, and Kiyan Williams.

The Artist Studio Program was launched in 2000 in response to the crisis of affordable studio space for artists living and working in New York City. The program provides six eligible artists working in all visual arts media a free private studio space accessible 24/7 and a fellowship. The program does not provide living space. Artists also have access to shared common areas: a media lab with editing suites, a shop for wood fabrication, and a kitchen. Each year, Smack Mellon convenes a panel of art professionals to select the artists from over 300 applicants. The studios are located on the lower level of our building at 92 Plymouth Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

The final panelists that selected the artists for 2022-2023 were Chloe Bass, Artist & Public Practitioner; Alison Burstein, Curator at the Kitchen; and Gabriel de Guzman, Director of Arts & Chief Curator at Wave Hill. Preliminary panelists were former Smack Mellon Studio or Exhibition artists: Patricia Encarnación, Tamara Kostianovsky, Christie Neptune, Rowan Renee, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, and Ezra Wube.

The 2022-2023 program began September 1, 2022 and ends August 15, 2023. Our next open call for the 2024-2025 residency cycle will open September 2023.
